Algae

"Algae" refers to a broad group of eukaryotes, they are photosynthetic organisms that are found in various ecosystems including water and soil.

Spirulina

At Rainforest Algae Corp, we primarily work with a species called Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis), a kind of blue green microalgae. We are fascinated by its high protein and micronutrient value, and its ability to grow rapidly and sustainably.

Our recent work

Since 2011, our team has been working to develop a new, environmentally controlled photobioreactor technology to cultivate Spirulina to be used as a sustainable protein alternative in food.

RAINFOREST METAPHOR

A Few Words About Us

The rainforest is our metaphor of being part of a movement to create thriving communities.

Like the rainforest, our company has relied on the diversity of our team’s capabilities and drive to create a thriving ecosystem. Victor Hwang and Greg Horowitt have said it well in their book The Rainforest – The secret to building the next silicon valley. The magic occurs as talent, ideas and capital come together as nutrients.

Our community has been crucial to our growth. We believe in paying it forward by working with local businesses, and giving back what we can to vulnerable populations.

RESEARCH

Current Research Focus

Maybe link to goals and objectives

This project aims to scale to a commercial level of a 10m3 and to fully automate and optimize system processes from cultivation through to harvesting, drying, and storage.

The next step in scale up operations will be to design / construct a 1m3 PBR algae cultivation platform.

Increase yield

Therefore, research efforts must include emphasis on reducing the energy input costs.
